Jeannette Porter is a third year Ph.D. student in the School of Journalism and Mass Communication.  She graduated from Swarthmore College in 1989 with a bachelor’s degree in Economics and from Virginia Commonwealth University in 2014 with a master’s degree in Multimedia Journalism.  Her research focuses on patterns of communication about mental health and mental illness in the African-American community.  “The medical community has made incredible strides in mental health in the last 50 years, and we don’t take advantage of it,” Porter said.  “I’d like to change that. I see changing the way we talk about mental health as a first step.”
