Marie Garlock, a Department of Communication Studies PhD candidate, focuses on Performance and Communication for Health, Development and Social Change. Interdisciplinary research in health communication centers on domestic and international practices of patient advocacy in embodied storytelling and witness, that help persons fighting advanced cancer navigate both a journey toward health, and a questioning of the status quo of cultural response to cancer in the U.S. Garlock has developed communication projects with global partners in health justice in Kenya, India, Tanzania, at the Cancer Centers of North Carolina, and the Duke Performing Science initiative. She enters the IHC program as a former arts, faith, and health initiatives liaison with the UNC Center for AIDS Research.
